Oops, looks like a particularly nasty asteroid on its way! This was the last action scene that had me worried all this time, so I'm relieved to have it done, whew. The funky look of the asteroid is a result of leaving it in the onion-skinned state I had it in to arrange its movement path, so all 20 frames are overlapping each other at 10% opacity each, which happened to result in a pretty nifty illusion of the thing tearing right at us.

Boy, I'm getting lazy with Selenis' rope, heh. I did add an extra effect to the background stars in this shot, can you tell what it is? I think it's got possibilities, not perfectly happy with the effect just yet though, I'll have to keep tinkering.

I'm finding that more and more I'm slowing down to add detail or additional little camera shots or something, which is part of what's taking episode 5 longer to draw; the question is, will it be worth it, or should I just try to crank out the episodes as quickly as possible without drawing bells and whistles? I suppose it will come down to how cool the bells and whistles actually are in the final product.

The shot I covered today, for instance, was supposed to be a simple shot of Selenis pressing the "retract" button on her grapple gun, but then I decided it should be a panning shot, from her face to the finger pressing the button, then I decided it should start zoomed in on her face, then zoom out, pan, and zoom in on her finger. Then I decided I should animate the scattered reflection of the approaching asteroid on her helmet, while all that other "camera" stuff is going on. And there should be a planet, a couple moving asteroids, and twinkled stars (I think I improved the "twinkle" filter I first started toying with yesterday) in the background. Way to complicate things, self!

You won't actually see the full figure drawing in the animation, since it's too big to fit in a single frame. Here it is, and some of the animating effects thrown in (eh don't mind that twitchy hand in this rough version :P):

If you're just dying to see the full 4000px-wide original drawing, you can try to fit that onto your screen from its page in the episode 5 gallery, which you can get to by clicking on this innocuous tiny version:

It's been a while since I pimped my deviantART account, so just as a reminder, all the stuff I put in the A* art galleries also goes up on my deviantART, where you can Favorite it and make it loved and popular, if that's something you're into.

That's it for now. Have a nice weekend!

This is going to be the best episode yet, by far. About how far are we into it, Ben? We've had dailies for... almost two months now? Is that right? How time flies...

Man you aren't kidding. It was funny today because I was hanging out with my folks and my dad was like "when's the next episode I wanna see it!" (actually he said it better than that, university professor and all you know) and I said well it's getting there, probably in a couple weeks, but you can check out the daily comics and get all caught up! And he was like oh, well how many of those are there, and I said "Hm...142" and his jaw dropped a bit, hee-hee.

I had 133 storyboards originally for episode 5, and we've just seen comics covering up through storyboard 108 (at daily #142). Oh wait there are some b's and c's in there complicating the numbering... Oh well anyway, SB 113 is the end of this super actiony Vero/Selenis scene. SB 114-133 is a dialogue that should go relatively quickly--much less frame-by-frame stuff, scaling stuff, etc needed. Those storyboard numbers don't match up to the daily comic numbers, obviously, but maybe it'll give you some idea of where we're at for this episode.

The asteroid is what's exploding, right? As opposed to Vero's base thingie?

Which explosion are you referring to? There's one way earlier where a missile fired by Selenis hits Barny, docked on the side of Vero's base, and another one later where the little bomb thing Selenis had gets jerked out of her hand by Vero's steering, and flies off into space and explodes by itself. The asteroid is still untouched and about to hit both of them, and Vero's base is still more or less intact.

I *was* a little concerned about confusion resulting from overlapping the threat of Selenis' bomb and the threat of the asteroid (we see the bomb, then the computer display of the asteroid, then the explosion of the bomb, then the asteroid) but it seemed more potentially tension-generating to have two threats going on at once, so I figured I'd leave them that way instead of having the bomb explode, THEN having the computer warn him about the asteroid. Hopefully it'll be easier to follow when it's in motion, but we'll have to see.

Hm well we'll see! I'm inserting a scene today (the next daily you'll see, I think) to try to make this next bit clearer...
