Ew, it's like animated sprite comics! :o At least the MST-style commentary makes it borderline bearable.

Hah, this is so silly. :P
I just want a decent chess game on PS3. Supposedly one based on the powerful Fritz chess engine is coming out on 8/3 under the odd title Battle vs. Chess, so hopefully it turns out to be nice.
I was looking for a free downloadable chess game for PC last night that had a good UI--I mean one a little more interesting than just the flat board diagram that all the real serious ones have--and didn't really manage to find one. Well, I sort of did: the old Windows 3.1 version (not the DOS version) of the animated chess game "Battle Chess" is freely downloadable these days; I think I got it from here.
No real player would take Battle Chess' chess engine seriously (but at least it doesn't do this), its straight-on, low-resolution view isn't exactly eye candy, and as far as I can tell it is not possible to get its sound working under modern versions of Windows, because it required an old Win 3.1 mode called "Standard Mode" for the sounds, which doesn't really exist anymore. Still, I found myself sucked into a few rounds on it in the wee hours, eventually heroically battling it to what probably would have been a draw on the lowest difficulty, if I hadn't caused it to hang while undoing/replaying a check move (it seemed to hang when I replayed back to a move that put me back into a previous check by the computer). Yes I am not good at chess! There's something I like about the old Battle Chess' animations, though, and if I can beat it on the lowest difficulty, I'll be ridiculously happy (on the other hand, if it keeps drawing or beating me, I'll probably give up on it shortly!). :P
The only other chess game I have is Chessmaster for the old B&W Game Boy, which is actually pretty good as far as I'm concerned. ;) Even though I haven't booted it up in years I can still its title screen greeting me with "Welcome...to Chessmaster" in its stern yet somehow warm static-y digitized voice. That would be before it proceeded to beat the pants off me, of course. :P
Edit: Dang, I forgot I don't have GB Chessmaster anymore; can't remember if the battery died, or what. Also, Brothersoft seems to have a pretty good list of free downloadable chess games for PC. Gonna have to check some of these out.

"Set the standards for all video games in the future!" Forever to infinity+++ So much that we don't make new games, we just keep releasing this one!
Also a good illustration that you really don't need much beyond N64-quality graphics, apparently... ;P

Well, commercial hubris aside .....Goldeneye was one of the best N64 games, if the *the* best. Actually SuperMario 64 was probably the best... but damn Goldeneye was great. Not sure if it set the standard either lol.
Having said that, if that's new gameplay graphics, they certainly are...underwhelming. Wii is lacking in that dept for sure. I'll wait to read the reviews on this game before buying, but this is one game I plan on getting.

This is quite good, (its done by high school kids)with a couple of caveats: - turn off the volume! The shrill cheering is...shrill. - The camera gets very shaky at times... - it gets long twards the end, and the ending is silly Having said that there are a couple of moments of brilliance. Sure, this isnt their idea originally, but they do a great job with it.

Pretty good, even if they seem to have run out of ideas partway through. Took me a while to figure out what was puppets and what wasn't!
