Updated, streamlined version of PS3 Virtua Fighter 5 (see entry 1224): stage lighting and effects have been changed--not for the better in my opinion, for instance they took out the rain and puddles in the downtown cage stage...so maybe this was for performance reasons...but anyway, aesthetically the stages aren't as lovely as they used to be--the camera is more zoomed-in, two fighters have been added: the so far for me forgettable tall emo Jean, and Taka Arashi, the sumo from VF3, who...kind of seems like a big airbag; Quest Mode is gone, and in fact there isn't anything to do in single player in FS (there is netplay this time around, though!), aside from Arcade mode and training, *unless* you buy the item/costume packs: with those you can waste a ton of time in the costume editor making weird looks for all the characters, and if you get all the packs, you get access to the beefiest actual single-player gameplay mode, Special Sparring, in which you can run through a bunch of different ~5-9 fight gauntlets of themed, customized AI opponents: there's one where they're made up to look like movie monsters, for instance.

Special Sparring, and spending way too much time in the costume editor, then, is this game's Quest Mode, and, it's pretty good; it's shorter bursts, but I can almost get into that next fight, next fight, next fight fugue state I seem to seek out, going through bunches of the enemy gauntlets. Yeah, the first couple fights are a little too easy, but fortunately after that the difficulty settles into a nice smooth groove, and you can get good battles in.

Even if you buy the complete edition or whatever it's called on the PSN store, you may find Special Sparring still greyed out when you run the game: in my case, this seems to have been because the PSN store only downloads 16 items: the game itself, and 15 character item packs--problem is, the game has 19 editable characters; for some reason, the two multi-character packs the "complete" edition pulls down, even though their descriptions list 19 characters by name, don't actually download the packs for Sarah, Jeffry, Shun, or Lau. So, I had to go download those from the store individually--then Special Sparring was available.

The fighting, aside from the closer-in camera showing more detail of the characters, feels quite similar to VF5 (vanilla)--which is good, because it's smooth and intuitive-feeling, but with a lot of depth if you want to dig in. I'm not quite sold on most of the newer characters yet--Goh, Eileen, Jean, and whatever the miniature luchador's name is--but the old ones all feel distinct in meaningful ways (I still hate Lion ;P), the game is fast-paced, but doesn't feel too fast to control, and has a unique feeling of moves and stances building and flowing naturally into other moves and stances. I dislike the side-step evade/dodge--that came along in VF3--and the silly ground-bounce combos--those came along in VF4--but, I have to admit they give the game a loose, free, rushing feeling that is almost necessary to counter-act its otherwise highly technical nature; it's a feeling that's missing in VF2 and Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary (on the NA VF4:Evo disc, under Options: Extras), and those games feel stifling by comparison.

I also dislike the colored flashbulb effect that bursts on the fighters when they strike each other--that came along in VF4, and was made always-on (in VF4 it was optional) in VF4:Evo--but I found that, unlike larger screen flashes (there are some of those during the load screens, I close my eyes : P), the hit FX flash is bearable to my photosensitivity if I wear sunglasses while playing. Which makes me cooler.

Also, in the costume creator, you can spend a lot of time just on sunglasses options, so that fits. And Sarah needs something to cover up her uncanny-valley eyes; I really wish they had modeled the character models, at least the faces, after the higher detail models they made for static images, which are completely different 3D art; most of the fighting model faces are all right, but Sarah's is bad--VF4 Sarah's face is way better--and Pai's isn't great.

A lot of the costume components aren't very good looking, and many don't go together that well; a lot are just really, really big and silly; also, some characters have notably worse costume options than others. Probably just as well, I spent way too much time in the costume editor as it is. ; P

The Special Sparring AI on Very Hard can in general be beaten by spamming a few simple moves, which does not work against the higher dan ranks in VF5 Quest mode (on Hard):

The FS AI is more aggressive, but that may be to its own detriment. Also, characters in general had their offensive power increased from 5 to FS, but the AI's defensive ability does not seem to have been ramped up to compensate.

  smbhax 10:43:43 03/05/21

Timing of jump attacks (for Command Training, etc): in 5 you could press up or up-forward and a P or K button to jump, and hold that P or K button to delay the jump attack coming out; in FS, you can't hold the button to delay the attack, so instead, jump with the G button, then hit the attack button when you actually want to attack.

You have to download the four missing costume packs through the game's DOWNLOAD CONTENT menu selection, which loads up the original, web-browser-based PS3 store; if you try downloading them through the main store, it will queue up the download for the full game and all BUT those four packs again. ; P

  smbhax 05:19:56 07/22/22

Uhhh okay this last time I installed, I went and downloaded those four who had been missing before (Jeffry, Shun, Lau, and Sarah) and Special Sparring was still grayed out; looking through Terminal, Akira was missing! So I had to go download his customization pack, too. : PPP

The itch to mess with costume making had itched me a few times lately, and maybe to see how I would do against the aggressive but poorly defending AI in my current no-guard-button scheme, so I told myself I'd just make "one" Jacky costume in Customization mode, do a little Special Sparring with it, a quick in and out affair, and then...

Oh huh Ronin San doesn't have a cut-off top knot or anything so eh well never mind that. : P

Well so it looks like making custom costumes and messing around with them in Special Sparring is still incredibly addictive to me. = oo

Also, although back when I was trying characters in different VFs, I liked the more direct Jacky in VF 4/4e/5--and I did notice here at first that FS just felt a little slower, I think it's the more elaborate animations--having struggled with a few safe Jacky moves against the brutal AI in the Quest modes in those games, aside from his ability to skip away to safety after many attacks being obviously taken away, I REALLY appreciate some of the changes to his move set here. Three punches is a knockdown now instead of a combo dead end that gets you wasted! I think his ax kick is a little faster--it feels way more combo-able, at least. Forward punches do cool things! He's got a really nice low sweep kick on dG+K! And way more than I can remember. Add in this AI's all-around weak defense and you've just got way more offensive options. ; )

I'd had trouble coming up with original Eileen costumes in the past, so I'd let myself think her costume pieces were kind of limited--but to my surprise I was able to cobble together costumes at least somewhat reminiscent of all the Darkstalkers main female characters from her wardrobe! = o

  smbhax 21:59:24 10/09/22

Making some costumes for Pai, turned out she had a snake and stuff got a little weird.

Having fun--on Normal, anyway--with some of Pai's moves, I didn't realize she had these knock-down power moves like uh dfP+K and bffG+K. Took me a while to find the ffG+K forward somersault the AI always hits me with.

Jeffry pounds everyone into the sand! = OOO Except...her?? The character against whom I haven't had trouble as anyone else so far?? Whoa man, VF!

That Wolf fight was a lot of fun. ^ _^

I am pleased with the Jeffry costume I came up with. ^=^

Also, the VF2 music rules, like all the others have. It's all re-orchestrated; I was thinking the older STs were chiptune, maybe I was confusing them with the DLC music in the wretched PS4 remake.

Two of my three ol' VF:Evo bread'n'buttah combos suddenly came back to me!

At what point do I stop pretending to play the other characters and just admit I have a Sarah Bryant fixation? : P

  smbhax 20:54:10 07/17/23

Should I just stop pretending with the other characters, and go back to my old ways of obsessively playing Sarah all the time? ; D With the other characters--I've been trying to stick with Jeffry, Jacky, and Jean, so I don't look like I just want to play dress-up with my Sarah doll all the time ]+]--I still have to kind of force myself to play them. Do I finally admit I have a Sarah problem, and just go with it? = P = Ooo

I seem to be stuck or maybe even have reverted to thinking of her as having her 4:Evo / 5 Vanilla move set; was getting flummoxed here by what were maybe FS changes to her Flamingo stance starters.

Like you can just back-kick now for a pretty quick starter. Back P+K is a slower advancing one that seems to favor nifty combo follows, like once I did this one that just sorta continued to walk and kick forward all over the opponent. ^ _^ And you can fast-axe-kick from Flamingo with the usual non-Flamingo uf G+K input. And at least one other regular special carries over in Flamingo but now I forget what that was.

Maybe aside from Flamingo, df G+K is a maybe TOO effective sweep. ; ) Although if it gets blocked it gets SO blocked. But it was kind of hilarious plaguing the AI with db G+K kicks to the shin, a lower/slower kick on d G+K, and then the df G+K sweep to bring them crashing down--AND provide an extra ground hit on follow-up!

I thought I had a new costume idea but um I didn't 'cause Sarah doesn't have a leather jacket or a punk haircut which were kind of the whole notion. Right! Silly me, went a bit too long without looking at her costume pieces I suppose. Anyway I kept poking at it and eventually came up with...something. : P Probably need to do a little weeding out of her closet pretty soon, pare it back down to the top stuff.

Found a couple small moves I didn't really know about! She can chain a G+K high sweep into a regular K, and from Flamingo stance (b+K for instance), I think it was something like f,f,K,K does a sorta short flying knee + kick thing.

Didn't recognize what it was when a Sarah hit me with the high rapid kick flurry I always spam from Flamingo 'cause while I'm used to seeing myself do it, the AI doesn't actually do it to ME very often. ; D It hits so rapidly and repeatedly, yikes! ^ _^

Also I thought that was way too funny when that other Sarah and I drew on a mutual back flip kick. = D

with Sarah Bryant, Akira Yuki, Wolf Hawkfield, Aoi Umenokoji, Vanessa Lewis, Goh Hinogami--and also some Jacky Bryant and Taka-Arashi

I ain't good with Akira, Wolf, Aoi, Vanessa, or Goh--especially Akira and Aoi, maybe; and I can't really handle FS's throwing system, which makes things tough for Wolf especially but also Aoi, Vanessa, and Goh, and I'm never going to be very good with their throws--and Akira's got moves I'm just never even going to be able to execute--but the challenge with using them in limited form is fun, at least. Although, Vanessa what with having to switch stances EVERY ROUND and having less moves in that stance feels like extra work for less pay-off, hrm.

I still don't really get Jacky here, it feels like they busted him up 'cause he was too good in Evo, so I should probably stick to Evo for playing him. And Taka I just couldn't manage, I know there's stuff I'm missing with him but also I think maybe he's fighting at a bit of a disadvantage anyway; in any case, it ain't easy to feel strong with him, so blah.

Switched my button rows so now it's P and K on top, T and GK on the bottom--right arm was getting slightly cramped being pulled back a bit to hit the bottom row all the time. ; )

Forgot Vanessa's only got a crouch throw in Defensive Style! Well, that simplifies things, anyway. : P

Tried mapping a G+P+K button to make switching to her Offensive Style before each round a little easier--but of course then I kept accidentally hitting it and confusing myself mid-round. : P So had to get rid of that. ; P

f,f+G+P does her take-down to mount, then it's G+P for the ground attack (optionally with left or right for different finishes).

I find her challenging to use but maybe it's about the right difficulty uh mostly, since Hard is maybe a little too easy sometimes and Very Hard is usually too perfect. : P

Gotta work on neutral Punch combos, it's the only thing fast enough to get me out of a lot of frame traps, like from Lau's rushdown. : P Also getting the range of her longer-ranged attacks (db+G+K heel kick, f,f+P lunging punch, b,b+G+P takedown, G+K spin kick, etc) down better.

VF5FS characters have four individual special win pose items each, according to https://virtuafighter.com/threads/vf5fs-item-pose-list.15911/ --and two generic ones (Floating ball and Flag) ; besides the Handcuffs (Waist), Vanessa's are Sharpshooter Rifle (back), Barbell (back), Throwing Knives (Waist).

The martial art Akira practices is Bajiquan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bajiquan , "a traditional Chinese martial art that features explosive, short-range power in close-combat and is well known for its rapid elbow and shoulder strikes."

The characters I'm thinking of messing with in FS mostly now are Akira, Sarah, Goh, and Aoi.

Ah, I dunno, I couldn't really find a costume or a fighting approach I liked with Aoi. I suppose no-counters Aoi is just kinda boring and I'm not smart enough for counters. ; D

Luma Sharpen from ReShade (not AdaptiveSharpen like I may have said, although maybe that's nice too I dunno) is nice for 720p upscaled games in RPCS3 like FS.

My video capture program OBS Studio's "Window Capture" capture mode can capture ReShade's LumaSharpen shader, but also captures the mouse pointer, even with Window Capture's mouse capture option unchecked 'p', so I guess I'll have to stick to its "Display Capture" mode, which captures everything on the desktop. (Normally I'd use "Game Capture" mode, which captures just the game--and also somehow doesn't show RPCS3's emulation frame drop hiccups--but Game Capture DOESN'T capture ReShade's post-processing, suck as LumaSharpen--or even the ReShade settings window that pops up inside the game window.)

Guess what I always wanted was Lei-Fei with a suit and mane. Kinda went through these teams a bit easily, gonna try to push it a bit next time.

NORMAL Arcade mode, VERY HARD Special Sparring w/ Lei-Fei

Arcade mode didn't do much for me--NORMAL difficulty was too easy until the end--but VERY HARD Special Sparring was SORT of engaging; it's still the did-they-block-or-not AI but eh I guess the best version of that and with all the costumes and moves you can sort of pretend it's actually thinking more than it is. = P

Programmer Kota Matsumoto has the only CPU/AI credits I can find for the entire VF series, and they're for VF2--which has kind of terrible AI unless you're feeling quite masochistic--and VF3/3tb https://www.mobygames.com/person/69404/kota-matsumoto/credits/ . He's also credited as a general programmer in 5, and Program Leader for 5FS--which may explain why FS's AI is a bit more playable than 4-through-5-vanilla? No credit for him on 4 or 4E.

Emo Wolf

Even without being able to do his big throws and stuff properly, Wolf's a lotta fun, with some nifty moves!

  smbhax 17:52:14 10/15/24

Couldn't work out any cool new costumes, so in my old Kurt Cobain costume I played as Jean Kujo accidentally through VERY HARD Arcade mode, then through the DLC "Special Sparring" mode, against the 10-person animal-themed "Rumble Jungle" team, on VERY HARD, almost twice due to an unfortunate accidental reset on the last fight the first time through = ooo, in Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown for PS3, running in the emulator RPCS3 in Windows and using ReShade's LumaSharpen shader.

It feels like some of Jean's moves don't quite link up right and he could'a used another iteration or two to get his attack flowing like it should. : P

I didn't seem to mind Arcade mode too much here but I think that's just because I managed to beat Dural. On VERY HARD! Which surprisingly wasn't all that hard, actually. Had a much tougher time against a few of the Rumble Jungle crew in Special Sparring.

  smbhax 16:47:54 10/19/24

Kage-Maru

COULDN'T just bash Punch and Kick with Kage as I can with most characters; his are too slow and tend to end in very vulnerable positions (you can add a Kick to the end of this default Punch string which makes it MARGINALLY more safe 'p').

Murdered repeatedly by Pai until I fully embraced his KG moves, especially dfKG, the reverse forward somersault kick or whatever that seems slow and dangerous but somehow isn't poked out or counter-attacked by the CPU nearly as much as most of his moves. Also his ubKG backflip kick (smaller version with just ubK) is relatively fast; does leave him hanging when blocked but maybe doesn't get counterhit quite as bad as his standing stuff. F,fKG torpedo kick seems not to get poked out much, and he's got a couple interesting moves around f,bKG or something...

dfKG hits at I think two points OTG even. If blocked you can usually get out of immediate danger by following with dfP low poke--you don't even have to go back to neutral on the stick first, which I don't THINK is typical and is a huge advantage. You can then do another dfKG, still not having to go N on the stick! I think following that up with df(?)K would have helped some too.

His dbK low poke seems relatively effective against the AI.

His ufK jump kick seems useful but I had trouble finding the right range, and coming up short gets brutally countered--not to mention that Pai had a hilarious knack for swatting it out of the the air. ; D He's got an interesting triple low kick type of thing on bK or something, but Pai had an uncanny knack for countering the third one. = o

Had trouble w/ Jean! But crushed Lau??! Kage's so weird!!!

I tend to feel bad giving non-white characters blond hair; definitely feels like a bad habit, probably due to unfortunately narrow cultural knowledge on my part! Kage DOES do a pretty great old-school (because yes I am old ; D) Aquaman though!! And he's so stern and sassy when he (finally = o) wins!

And a surprising number of the game's stages are water-themed!

  smbhax 19:19:26 10/23/24

Lau Chan

This ended up being pretty rough; yeah Lau can steamroll in fast BUT most of the moves I could find for him were quite unsafe on block; also I didn't manage to be very evasive as him, so like although he has a backflip kick move, even if I hit them with it, the CPU could still catch right up and hit me in return! Dang.

Did like the Sagat-like costume I came up with him toward the end, though.

Ahh yeah I was last playing Jeffry in May of last year https://youtu.be/o3ZJM_CR8jM on HARD difficulty, not VERY HARD. = PPP

Had loads of trouble with both Brad and Jeffry against VERY HARD Grab Bag, especially as Brad against "Ethan" (Ken Masters costume) Akira--could only seem to get him with dfK, ffK, and dfPK,PK--and as Jeffry vs "Tommy" Lei-Fei--had to resort to dbK and sPPPP. I don't feel like I'm able to get much done at all with Brad's punch bobbing and Jeffry's uh throws I guess--or any of his bigger moves, which Lei-Fei would just jab out into long kata combos. ; PP

Brad does have some sweet costumes though.

Jacky's a lot more complicated in FS--but also more interesting to try to start fitting together, I suppose. And he's got fun outfits. ^ _^

Is Sarah overpowered or did my obsessive play / costume making with her years ago sort of pay off? ; D 'Cause I seemed to be able to blast through on Very Hard with way less trouble than with any other character!

This new version of RPCS3 (0.0.34-17137) seemed to run the game smoother--didn't run into occasional slowdown like previous versions had been doing. Dunno if I just got lucky but it was nice!

  smbhax 18:38:19 11/28/24

Pai doesn't hit hard and she GETS hit hard so takes some work to get results with her--kinda got into a rhythm where it wasn't going so badly, kinda, eventually. ^ _^ (Okay I guess Akira and Wolf and Kage were still problems... ... Anyway it didn't feel completely hopeless. ; D)

My impression of RPCS3 build 0.0.34-17137--the one from the previous FS session, with Sarah--being exceptionally slowdown-free was probably illusory; I mean, the slowdown in FS in RPCS3 is so seemingly kind sporadic and random-ish that it can just not occur for long periods of time, I think. So yeah I guess or hm well maybe I will just leave it on that build for a while--until I definitely encounter slowdown during play with it. ; D

Punch work good on Sarah. Not good on Eileen, she's too short. Not fair! ;_; Ow.

Back-forward punch is a dashing tackle. Does kinda ridiculous damage. Back-forward punch-kick is a shoulder hit that pops the victim up in the air. Worked great on ninja! Eileen blocked it every time. ;_;;;

Can't get sucked into mashing P at Eileen. Df K catches her as she skips back, at least. Should'a been using that more.

Trying to re-create the costume worn by the Akira Yuki seen in Sega's recent "New Virtua Fighter Project" teaser trailer, and then meet up with a "Stella"--or an approximation in a Sarah Bryant--to re-enact the teaser's brief blurry sparring scene ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFU5lx-RfNA )--in the DLC "Special Sparring" mode, on VERY HARD, in Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown for PS3, running in the emulator RPCS3 in Windows, with ReShade's LumaSharpen shader.

I uh had trouble against Pai. ; D

One nice thing I notice now in the New Virtua Fighter Project teaser gameplay is it doesn't have any flashes on block and only dull dust flashes on hit, unlike the bright hit flashes (and dust flashes on block) that got added in VFes/VF5US and are still in R.E.V.O.

2006 was the release of the original VF5. 5R was 2008 and FS was 2010--so one implication is that the original team wasn't involved in those updates to 5.

Was wondering why this was so much harder with Goh this time around than I remembered from before--aaaaand it's because last time I played him, just a few months ago, I was playing on just HARD difficulty, which is WAAAAAY easier than VERY HARD. So uh yeahhh doesn't seem like I can manage Goh; on Very Hard it's a huge amount of work for me to get anything strung together with him, plus I have trouble reading the ranges of his moves so he feels unintuitive all around (and his moves are tricky and not straightforward ANYway), AND he's actually kinda slow, too. Sheesh! I'm not good enough to overcome all those hurdles!!

Yeah excuses excuses. ; D

Anyway I think Goh's off the list! = oo

W/ NES-style shaders in ReShade for that super-chunky, limited palette look! ^ _^

I got "NES REShade" from https://www.nexusmods.com/batmanarkhamknight/mods/1855?tab=files , and used the AspectRatioSuite and CShade_Quantize FX from it, setting CShade_Quantize to 256x224 Resolution and 6/6/6 Color Band Range.

It's actually slightly lower resolution than NES because that 256 horizontal is for the full 16x9 width, not the 4:3 picture--but 256 is the highest res it allows.

It's also not the NES's specific palette, I'll have to keep an eye out for a shader that has that. I'm pretty sure it would look significantly more grotesque. ; )

But I like the way this punches up the colors and introduces funky in-between hues. ^ _^ (You COULD turn that part of it on without the pixelization, if you wanted.)

I tried this effect on VF3tb for Dreamcast in Flycast but it didn't grab me nearly as much as it does in VF5FS; maybe the colors just come out in more interesting ways in FS, I dunno!

I dressed Eileen up as Link from Zelda and put her through 1 and 3/4ths (because I got so triggered I yet again accidentally held down slightly on the continue screen which goes to the quit option instead 'p'p'p'p'p'p_) playthroughs of Special Sparring.

I don't think I can handle playing Eileen. Like, I hate combos. 8P And recorders! ... I'm probably a little better with her than I am with Goh, at least. : P

Oh Google says "Linkle" is a girl Link from Zelda spin-off game Hyrule Warriors.

I even forgot how to take Wolf's armbands off in the costume editor (note to self: Costume Settings, Type C, Upper Arms) 'p'.

(Looking at a few Wolf videos back, I was never very good with him or anything--but fast opponents like Lei-Feis and Pais are particularly rough!)

He seems built to do stuns and set-ups for his big damage and I'm never gonna manage that kind of thing. ; D But I can at least do way more moves with him here than in 3tb where he felt pretty limited for me so I guess I kinda like him more here, even if I'm still terrible with him. ; DD

I really don't understand this Jacky but I like some of his moves and others just straight get me killed. ; D

Update 5/26: Whoa, weeks after being published, this video gets a music copyright claim on the last fight--in Akira's stage; specifically, on track "アキラBB BGM" (katakana for "Akira"), from "サミー株式会社" ("Sammy kabushiki gaisha"--"Sammy joint-stock company," aka Sammy Corporation). That was on "Stage BGM Type" "Type A" under Settings--Type A is supposedly music from VF5 (vanilla). So, guess I'll be trying to remember to avoid Type A--good thing I'm not trying to play the VF5 vanilla PS3 game, I suppose? Hopefully this expiration--because I've never had this before in FS--of rights only applies to that type... But this could be Sega trying to get people to update to one of its current, more mangled ports of FS. ; P

Lei-Fei

Found his back-P-P at the end vs Lau and thought I was on to something, then took it back around against Vanessa and couldn't even deploy it. Sheesh. Worst against Vanessa and especially E-Honda (Big Kev), the whole world is upside-down when I try Lei-Fei = ooo

That VF2 music ruled though.

Didn't work out until messing around after the playthrough that it's her dfP little offensive mode uppercut that really messes with the AI--it even made Jacky just back right out of the ring!

Before that all I'd found that didn't kinda get me automatically murdered was her dbGK axe kick...and her ufK flying knee is KINDA worth the risk 'cause if it hits it leads to like the one big combo I found that I could do reliably. ; D

Had to teach myself an actual Akira move when my mashing couldn't keep up with Kage's frame-trapped damage output. = P fGK,P turned out to be one of the safer options, too. Then messing around later I found dfGK,P which feels like it has another follow-up in it but I can't figure out what that might be. ; D Sometimes it seemed designed to be followed by a sidestep and then PP or something; I'm terrible at side stepping though. ; D

I forgot about Jacky's flip-kick (ubK). 'p' Seems like he's built for set-ups but he's got a couple other pretty good one-off moves like

ubK flip kick
ufK double jump kick
dbPK low combo thing
dbGK sweep

You'd think a sumo would be a big button-slappy type but nope not Taka, you gotta find little dinks and set-ups if you don't wanna get wrecked. Tricky but once I found those two little combos I was quite successful so hmmm.

ffPK - two-fisted punch, timing/spacing tricky
running K - jump kick
ufGK - two-kick ascending

ffP - rocket punch, haven't got the timing/spacing really
bfP - looping overhead punch, didn't do great w/ it

He's just got a lot of stuff, most I still have to learn, especially some multi-hit sorta combo things, none of which I managed to figure out yet--but they looked cool when I did them accidentally. ; D

pk (chargeable) - mid palm strike knockdown; kinda fast
pp,ubK - semi-safe-ish low-damage combo; I have trouble on the flip escape
ffK - flying kick blasting knockdown; very unsafe

He's also got screaming uppercuts on dfPK and bPK (I think that was it?) that lead to floats for big combos, but besides being very unsafe like just about all his moves, these are also really slow, especially df.

ground throws - decent option on wake-up?
dfK - the usual rangey jab, slow-ish but s'okay
dfPP? - short uppercut flurry knockdown

The back-df was the only fairly reliable move I managed to find, the AI seems unprepared for its range and second hit. The knee is quite risky but the combo damage kinda makes it worth it, maybe. I need to work on reliably sprinkling low punches into punch flurries, I had good results the few times I managed that early-ish on, I think.

ufK - jump kick with two hits, second has weirdly wide hurt box; often works
dfK - the usual long jab kick, s'okay
dfPK,PK - low double-uppercut wade-in, covers some ground & often connects
ffK - mid spin-kick knockdown; I have some trouble w/ the spacing

Lei-Fei's stance & kata-based moveset is exactly the type of thing I'm bad at and I feel like I get stuck and can't move but ehhh I did okay except for Lau who just steams in and I can't usually out-punch him and I feel like I get stuck in punch strings and he blocks and then its over. 'p' If I can break the fight down to like specifically ranged knock-down moves...

dfGK - silly double windmill flip kick
bf(?)GK - thought was fGK at first but that wasn't working well; anyway, a flip kick
PKx3 - rangey hand-swipe w/ two-hit knockdown follow-up
bPP - fast knockdown
ufGK - in-place jump knockdown
ffP - one-punch knockdown (?)
bK - decently ranged toe kick, kinda like what I'd like his dfK to be
db(?)K - little shin kick knockdown or otg, works pretty well following punches
fPK - some kind of power punchy thing, s'okay
Kx3 - h/l knockdown combo, can kinda work from neutral start, unless it doesn't ; D

bPK - kinda power strike thing
fPK - another kinda power strike

ffK - big slide kick?
ffGK - uh some kinda big kick, I forget
fGK - somersault kick
dbGK - high kick knockdown--can be horrible, or great
KK - two-kick knockdown--but sometimes 2nd is out of range(??)

Kage's knee is bfK, which is hard to use in my usual application for a knee strike, getting crouching wake-up campers out of my face--and I was really struggling here until I found his move that does this well, ubGK.

Gotta work out his smaller moves. PK seemed interesting--or was it KP? And once he turns backwards he kind of owns even though I have no idea what I'm doing.

GK,P - longish-range up-punch, then hit 'em on the way down
f,fP - eh some kinda hand knockdown or elbow I forget
fK - knee; launcher only if they're standing, pretty much = limited as wake-up hit
bfP - palm strike knockdown but seems to miss shorter characters a lot
bfPK - sorta side-angling double fist punch sends 'em flying
fGK,P - wades into a slappy combo thing; can kinda follow w/ side-step then more punches or something I dunno it gets real complicated and I'm bad at the side-step

Shun Di and El Blaze are nightmarish as my world's worst Akira: Shun dances around everything I try and slowly out-combos me; El Blaze blocks, punches me once, then punch-combos me to death and I don't know how to get out of it.

Well, trying to stay back a bit kinda helps and then I can sometimes get in a counter-punch to break the punches. But I haven't learned Akira's big hit attack ranges properly so I felt useless at trying to range out anyone especially those fast guys argh argh auugh 8O
