GameFAQ's code for switching the game to the English SNES version, Brawl Brothers: 'Constantly press B,A,X, and Y during the Jaleco logo until you reach the title screen. When successful you'll reach a black screen. It is actually the title screen. Press start once and then press up once to move to the options because you cannot see the screen properly. When you exit from the options the game will now change to "Brawl Brothers".'

("Constantly press" means hitting B,A,X,Y, one by one in that order, rapidly and repeatedly.)

According to Wikipedia, "the Japanese version of the game features different character names, no maze-like stages, an expanded ending sequence and the addition of a groin kick move for playable character Douglas Bild."

(Wikipedia also mentions "It is the only known SNES game that features its Japanese version on the same cartridge." But is Rushing Beat Ran the only SFC game with its English version on the same cartridge? ;))

Love the pile-driving, ground-comboing mechanics in this fast belt scroller; kinda don't like the regular enemies being so trigger happy when you've got limited continues; really don't like the bosses being effectively unhittable outside of your Ikari/Angry powered-up invulnerable state...which I had turned off because I didn't like its flashy FX. ;_; Had to save-scum the fourth, ultra-long-feeling stage. Next time I play with Ikari ON and Easy difficulty.

Robotically cheap boss mechanics, enemies who combo you to death off the ground once you're down--the final boss doing both of those x3 ; PPP--extremely short-looping, extremely repetitive music, and stages that drag on way too long with identical encounters over and over.

"HARD" difficulty w/ Infinite Lives cheat. Ikari Mode--"Angry Mode" in the US version, "Brawl Brothers"--OFF.

1:56 - Option Mode
2:55 - playthrough
24:33 - throwing off the Akira elevator
31:48 - Wendy the better wrestler
1:00:33 - electric island
1:37:46 - boss
2:04:10 - ending & credits

Mostly really nice art but yeah I guess I'm gonna sell this cart.

Ikari Mode--where you get invulnerable and super-strong after taking a certain amount of damage--would help counter-cheese the bosses for a few seconds at least once per life but the flashing FX it puts on the character makes my crusty old eyes feel funny so I turned it off. It kind of feels like you're meant to use that while burning through lives/continues in order to get through the final boss and his instant-on defensive invulnerable states, death juggles, instant counter-attacks, and triple health meter.
