Sounds like -- https://tetris.wiki/Tetris_The_Grand_Master_4_Absolute_Eye#Asuka -- you have to get a Tetris or All Clear to get past level 99 in Asuka.

I turned off background animations, which is a nice option to have. No option to turn off the particle effects, but the game was actually not very flashy at all--nothing that bothered my eyeballs during play in terms of flashiness, aside maybe from the occasional slightly jarring background switch.

The faded-out ghost piece, though, ended up making my eyeballs go all widgey, and I had to turn it off. 8=o

There doesn't seem to be any option to make the playfield larger on-screen, or to move it to the center of the screen, even in 1P--so it's always shrunk down with huge borders, and you're playing way over on the left side (1P) or slightly less way over on the right side (2P)--you can swap the sides, at least.

The block colors don't change during play, which I suppose is helpful--unlike NES Tetris, say, you can remember oh the BLUE L is the one that hooks THAT way, for instance (I didn't actually manage this in my brief play ; D).

After recording, I played a bit of NES Tetris--and realized that even without hard drop and other modern amenities, I was having at least as much fun playing that version, and with graphics and sounds I like more. And I get to about the same spot, level 9 or so, in each one. ; ) And I didn't really like the other TGM4 modes all that much. So, I asked Steam for a refund on TGM4--I'm just not good enough at Tetris for it to make a difference! I'll just stick to the NES version--at least until I master that one, which is probably not gonna happen in this lifetime anyway. ; D

(After that, I found a color tweak in Mesen that let my eyeballs handle the Rosy Retrospection modernization hack for GB Tetris--so that'll be my modern Tetris option. ^ _^)
