Actually I was playing the C128 version. : P This is a modern roguelike by Micah Bly, not sure it's still being worked on. Had said was doing C64, C128, Amiga and uh some b&w older computer versions.

Ran in VICE. No sound? Very rudimentary gameplay. Four directional movement, bonk into things, mostly. ? screen says HELP key for something, not sure how to use HELP key in VICE. Didn't find healing stuff so would just die after a level or two of bonking. Nice graphical style, though.

Oh the OP says the demo has only 3 levels (full to have 25 plus)--I dunno, you bonk into the pink staircase and it (slowly) loads another, identical-looking level. Maybe the monsters are different between them.
 
Inventory screen (G) wants you to use numeric keypad for navigation/activation, rather inconveniently. 'p' Num keys can get it done, clumsily (5 to select).
