| | | [Text from my 2018 video's YouTube description] Having a go in Arcade Archives Renegade on PS4--27050 pts, my high score so far. : P It's a tough game! Took me forever just to beat the first stage, turns out its a cinch once you realize where to utilize the jump kick. It doesn't run super fast, but the combat in Renegade is actually super-satisfying! It's got the "Attack Left" / "Jump" / "Attack Right" button layout that Technos Japan would skip for their next beat 'em up, the hugely successful Double Dragon, but would come back to for Double Dragon II; it takes some getting used to be it does make sense, especially the way Renegade has enemies pacing you and circling you constantly. The AI here is sharp! There are running clothesline moves! A really strong back kick! And you can sit on guys when they're down and finish them off with a quick flurry to the face! Can't do that in another Technos beat 'em up until the NES version of Double Dragon, as far as I'm aware (and not in DDII arcade, either). So, it's a good game. The Japanese version, "Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun," also has the distinction of being the first "Kunio" game, but for this American release, they changed the setting from high school ruffians to weird NY-ish street/subway gangs straight out of the 1979 "The Warriors" movie. ; ) I had the Japanese PS2 version by Hamster, but didn't have great memories of it. The 480i PS2 graphics probably weren't helping there. But I'm glad I ended up finally giving Hamster's PS4 version a try! Now I just gotta get better at jump-kicking those motorcyclists on stage 2... |

| | | Later Arcade Archives releases had the Japanese and US versions of arcade games bundled together--you could pick either version from the title screen menu--but the US got only the US arcade version, Renegade. In Japan, Hamster released separately first Arcade Archives Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun, the Japanese arcade version (アーケードアーカイブス 熱血硬派くにおくん - https://www.arcadearchives.com/title/aca-007/) and then Arcade Archives Renegade, the US arcade version (アーケードアーカイブス レネゲード -https://www.arcadearchives.com/title/aca-033/). Hamster's web page marketing text for the Japanese arcade version Google Translates as "Save your best friend Hiroshi! A life-or-death battle begins against the villains! "Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun" is an action game released by Technos Japan in 1986. The main character, Kunio, fights against bad guys such as delinquents and biker gangs who attacked his best friend, Hiroshi." and for the US arcade version as '"Arcade Archives Renegade" is the overseas version of the not-for-sale "Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun." The graphics are significantly different from the Japanese version, and the setting is America. As a token of our appreciation, we are offering this free gift to all customers who have purchased "Arcade Archives Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun" and two of the following titles from among the Technos Japan titles in the Arcade Archives: ・Arcade Archives Nekketsu High School Dodgeball Club ・Arcade Archives Double Dragon ・Arcade Archives Exciting Hour ・Arcade Archives Shusse Grand Sumo' |
