| | | [Text from my 2018 video's YouTube description] Attempting a play-through of Arcade Archives Super Dodge Ball on PS4, on the default difficulty, and...I got stuck. : P This is the original, arcade version of the game, and the gameplay in some fairly significant ways from the console versions it spawned--I'm thinking specifically of the NES version, since that's the one I played a bunch back in the day. For one thing, only the giant characters can do super throws--trick throws that are hard to catch and inflict a lot of damage. The player's team only has a single giant character--the captain--but other teams can have more than one giant character, and the Japan team you come up against eventually is ALLLLLLL giant characters! Since giant characters have significantly more health than the cannon fodder regular-sized characters who make up the rest of your team, AND the game gives you a pretty short time limit in which to finish the other team off, when facing lots of giant characters, it's really a race to do enough damage to them in time. This might not be so tough in the Japan match except for another rule difference in the arcade version, which is that the CPU team gets to replace their first KOed character with a substitute! Wha?! And of course it's another giant character! ;_; PLUS, their giant characters can do this "compressor"-style super throw that, after 100% failure, I can only guess is actually impossible to catch. So eventually I started ducking it, or trying to--because if the game is like scrolling a lot--as it will tend to be when the other team charges up for an attack--or your character is just retreating from having made an attack, or eh the game just doesn't feel like letting you control the character currently being targeted, you simply cannot duck, and will get beaned. Hard. And if does let you duck, the tiny team-mates have an uncanny knack for positioning themselves right behind the ducking character, and then they get one-hit-killed by the super throw the other character ducked. Well, they took one for the team...pointlessly. : P So eventually I just had to admit defeat and give up. I couldn't figure out how to do enough damage fast enough; if you really go on the attack with your big character, he will tend to get finished off sooner or later by uncatchable super-throw counter-attacks the game doesn't let you duck--and then you're pretty much sunk, because your small characters simply don't have the firepower to KO all the opposing giants within the time limit. I guess it's possible to do if you score a hit with pretty much every attack--I haven't figured out how to do that, that's for sure; the AI too often just runs out of the way--and don't get caught in too many uncatchable and unduckable super counter-attacks. Didn't seem like I would manage that any time soon, though! : o Yeah there are easier difficulty levels, but eh what would be the point. : P |
