A fork of Hack, which was "inspired by" Rogue (see entry 1493).

Playable online at https://alt.org/nethack/ -- although it doesn't seem compatible with my split, shortened keyboard as the two directional key layouts are a) a confusing cluster in the middle of the keyboard, which on mine is split in two, and b) numeric keypad, which my keyboard doesn't have (well it has a separate battery powered one but I don't feel like pulling it out).

"Gnollhack"--see entry 1987--is a graphical fork of NetHack.

^ Ah that's accessed from the "edit your config file" link on the front page of alt.org/nethack.

W/ tilesets, I can't tell where there are unexplored parts of passages. Or is that a problem in the ASCII terminal interface too? Eh. I'd swear it's more confusing with tilesets.

Hack front from https://github.com/source-foundry/Hack-windows-installer/releases/tag/v1.6.0 . Fits in 1080p, Hack 28 point in PuTTY (right-click and pick Full Screen from pop-up menu, may have to CTRL+R redraw after that).

Connect with PuTTY in SSH to nethack@alt.org, port 23 (default SSH port--alt.org/nethack doesn't make this clear at all, it says "ssh nethack@nethack.alt.org" which maybe is how you do it from like Windows command line or something--but not from PuTTY). : P

PuTTY doesn't display same colors as alt.org, can't find anyone with definite conversion key for using PuTTY color settings to make it identical to web colors, hmph (can't just swap 'em, that would scramble green for healthy health bar for instance).

Tweaked PuTTY blue colors a bit, the darker one is generally too dark.

NetHack's NAO (Nethack.Alt.Org) server supports Dgamelaunch, so in PuTTY you can put in auto-login info and you won't have to enter your username/pass every time you enter the server:

https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Dgamelaunch
"
PuTTY

If you want to use Telnet, in your saved session's configuration, go to Connection > Data, and in the section Auto-login username enter your credentials in the format "yourname:yourpassword" (without the quotes). An alternative method available under Environment Variables is to add a new variable USER and set its value to the same. Note that Telnet traffic is unencrypted and unauthenticated, so you risk exposing your credentials to an attacker snooping on your local network or the Internet.

If you use the more secure SSH protocol, you will use the environment variable method as for Telnet, but the variable name is DGLAUTH. The value is the same. Also, set the Auto-login username to whatever your dgamelaunch server uses, typically nethack."

  smbhax 15:12:25 03/05/26

Sometimes have to hit Enter after Full Screen PuTTy (CTRL+R doesn't do it).

  smbhax 15:13:55 03/05/26

^ Uh at 13:59:46 that should have said "Hack 'FONT'," not "front." I don't know why their font requires an installer that also required my system to reboot but eh hm well at least it the font shows up in PuTTy now. 'p'

  smbhax 16:17:13 03/05/26

Wait now it's doing alt.org:22. Huh.

  smbhax 16:17:52 03/05/26

Oh right it's 22 that's the default SSH port, not 23.

  smbhax 17:00:13 03/05/26

Ah actually I could just swap colors: change PuTTY "Cursor Color" from 0 255 0 (bright green) to 85 85 85 (gray), and PuTTY "ANSI Yellow" from 187 187 0 (darkish yellow) to 170 85 0 (darkish brown). Those are the only two differences I've seen so far.

"If at all possible, connect using the SSH protocol, as Telnet provides no encryption or authentication and leaves your credentials vulnerable to network snoopers."

To make IBMgraphics work with PuTTY, you need to set Remote Character Set (under Window/Translation) to CP437"

"By default, right-click pastes in PuTTY. This can easily lose your game if you accidentally right-click a window when you have a long piece of text on the clipboard. It's recommended that you change the mouse button actions from Compromise to Windows (under Window/Selection) to disable this. Remember that, unless you save your session settings, you have to set this option again every time you play."

My amazing NetHack career: https://www.alt.org/nethack/player-endings.php?player=smbhax

Oh cool if you go to the full player info page https://www.alt.org/nethack/plr.php?player=smbhax and then their "all games" page https://www.alt.org/nethack/player-all.php?player=smbhax and click on a "d" (dumplog) for a game there, it'll even show you the dungeon map(s?).

Not a big fan of the appropriated Chinese cultural names for the Monk "lore"; that could stand some updating. NetHack was first released in '87 and updates since them seem quite slow; there have only been two "major" updates to the game in this century, the last (version 3.6.0) in 2015. The last minor update released was in February 2023. In theory another minor update is continually in progress.

Huh there are several fancier ways potentially to shoot arrows: https://www.nethack.org/v367/Guidebook.html#toc_7.2.1 ("Q" then "f" and you won't have to keep specifying the missile f; or characters like rangers can shoot multiple at once, like "2f" or "2t" to limit to two shots).

Ah, with the Hack font and having already set PuTTY's "Window - Translation - Remote Character Set" to "CP437"--the old IBM PC character set (I used this in my "DOS"-style version of Angband, too), all I had to do was put "OPTIONS=IBMGraphics" in my .nethackrc file, and hey, DOS-style graphics! = D

I ended up changing my cursor color to a sorta warm reddy orangey sherbetty color for nice cozy visibility. 'p'

Oh, since I had the Hack font, which I guess has the necessary unicode characters in it, and I had already set PuTTY's "Window - Translation - Remote Character Set" to "CP437"--the old IBM PC character set (I used this in my "DOS"-style version of Angband, too) all I had to do to get the IBM DOS-style graphics in NetHack was to set "OPTIONS=IBMGraphics" in my .nethackrc--but I spaced on that. Something for next time!
