Not to be confused with so-called "Donkey Kong Original Edition" hacked version Nintendo released on like eReader and I think later DS circa 2010 that added in the "pie factory" stage not included in the regular Famicom/NES/FDS versions.

Arcade Classics Series cart has a Revision A, sometimes called Revision 1, which is the more common version--distinguished by "A" stamped in upper right corner of sticker on back of cart. Differences vs original cart release (via tcrf) are brighter logo on title screen, fix for Mario stopping moving if you hit a diagonal, and Mario no longer does (glitchy) jump with(out) hammer in demo.

Doesn't have arcade version's start sequence where DK carries Pauline up the construction-site building, then jumps on top to make the girders go crooked.

For the best I guess since I'm not keen on maiden-in-distress scenes. You still have Pauline standing in a little platform next to Kong during gameplay, Kong carrying her up ladder at stage end, etc. On romhacking.net, a 2013 romhack by "Mike Mika" (presumably the same as the Digital Eclipse developer) released their lone romhack, "Pauline Edition" for DK Original Edition, swapping Mario and Pauline; the hack also includes a patch converting RevA to Original Edition, ie containing and patching in pie factory, meaning it contains the pie factory resources, which I wouldn't have thought rhdc would have wanted to host; anyway I'm not going to use that.

So--given the woman as helpless victim aspect, should I be playing this? Maybe that'll wear on me. I'd resisted getting it all this time I think (maybe Pauline's plight was part of it and I forgot; at least I didn't get the Famicom version where she's in the cart label art, being abducted; of course this should also prevent me from playing lots of early games and game series where woman are imperiled or outright killed for male motivation, for instance Super Mario and Double Dragon!! And I'm not gonna stop playing DD, am I? So yep I'm a big hypocrite argh) because I didn't think I liked the stages after the first and I just wanted to be able to play the first repeatedly--but couldn't find a hack or cheat code that enables that, and examining the other (two only--no pie factory (actually cement factory, it's just the cement is served up in weirdly giant pie-like containers) stages...I guess they aren't so bad.

I mean it's better than the follow-up, DK Jr, whose vine-clambering and easy falling-off-of I just can't handle (although I played a bit back in the day on a friend's ColecoVision); and the follow-up to that, DK 3, where Mario's shooting an insecticide gun up the screen.

I haven't found a hack/cheat that removed Pauline from peril; closest is a Touhou Project-based hack that replaces the sprites with Touhou characters, and doesn't have the Pauline replacement carried off between stages--although they're still standing there on the prisoner platform during gameplay. Anyway that hack only works on a Pauline-kidnapping-illustrated EARLY Famicom version--however you'd tell that apart. Hm maybe the Pulse Line version I suppose. Also it completely changes the stage art into not-great-looking tiles. Also the whole Touhou thing is just girlie girls everywhere, isn't it? So that's kind of just replacing one issue with another. ... My own webcomic is probably worse strictly speaking so again I'm a big hypocrite. (Apparently the creator is fine with credited, non-commercial use of his stuff; the hack puts a copyright noticed to his handle, ZUN, on the title screen.)

Okay, well, I at least don't have to play women-as-victim games. I'm going to sell:
- Donkey Kong
- Super Mario Bros.
- Mario Bros. (no women in peril but Mario's from DK so)
- Mario Bros. Classic Serie
- Double Dragon
- Double Dragon II
- Double Dragon III
- Double Dragon (GB)
- Kung Fu
- Ninja Gaiden
- Final Fight 3
- Super Real Mahjong (WHY do I still have this sheesh)

(So that's most of my non-NGPC--which are in their own purgatory over the SNK ownership--carts. DD is gone but there's still Kunio and Renegade; in those initial Kunio games, it's "just" his male friend who gets beat up (arcade) or kidnapped (Famicom).)

And others:

Final Fight (from Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle dumps)
Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo (PCCD)
Kung Fu Master (Irem Arcade Hits)

Mario, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Final Fight, Kung Fu, and Ninja Gaiden are series founded on violence against women.
