| | | According to https://www.satakore.com/jpnmediumcdcase.php , comes in a medium CD jewel case (~12mm thick rather than 10.4mm standard CD jewel case). The hinge section and CD track of the case is clear rather than black. Looks like "World Cup '98 France ~Road to Win~" is the same way. |
| | | | Wow yeah it's a REALLY thick-feeling case. |
| | | | Apparently it's a bunch of other mostly first-party Japanese releases that have the clear (mostly standard thickness ^ _^, not medium like SWS98) cases https://selectbutton.net/t/saturn-is-not-our-future/10897/167 . |
| | | | VF Remix (entry 2043) is a clear case for instance. |

| | | Sega Worldwide Soccer '98 runs at 352x240 rather than maybe more usual Saturn 320x224. So instead of 4.823 and 3 for square fullscreen/windowed scalars, need to adjust 'em a bit: ss.correct_aspect 0 ss.xscale 2.727 ss.xscalefs 4.091 ss.yscalefs 4.5 |
| | | Hah its UI is actually drawn for 1:1 PAR and the in-game 3D ball looks rounder at that too; this brings it wider than 4:3 and is fitting perhaps given the game's title har anyway: ss.correct_aspect 0 ss.xscale 3 ss.xscalefs 4.5 ss.yscalefs 4.5 |

| | | In Mednafen: 2:42 - club teams 16:20 - Options 19:15 - national teams 25:22 - World Wide Cup (as France) (Easy) 28:30 - vs Denmark 47:20 - vs Croatia 1:00:07 - vs Ireland 1:13:25 - vs Romania 1:22:30 - vs Greece 1:26:04 - wacky goal 1:34:03 - France vs Croatia exhibition (Normal) 1:35:23 - missed penalty! ; D It's playable in a sort of wacky arcade way but the mechanics and AI are quite limited and start to feel very repetitive. Maybe I have this problem with sports games in general? Definitely have a problem with managing buttons in sports games. ; D Was thinking I'd have to sell it but eh it's the most I've ever really been able to play a footy game so maybe I might as well keep it, then I won't keep looking for some other one. 'p' I dunno. Oh hey I suppose I could use the Player Editor mode thing to get Zidane in there in place of the stand-in? HM. Or maybe it's just more fun to shout ridiculously about Zidane at a player who doesn't look (or play, for that matter!) anything like him. The music is good, the voice-overs are kinda funny, the national team kits are generally pretty spot-on, and I like the graphics--lotsa color. That page kinda explaining the real-world teams to which the generic club names correspond is https://segaretro.org/Sega_Worldwide_Soccer_98 . If you frame-by-frame it you'll see the game updates the ground plane and the 3D stuff on alternating frames. ; ) |

| | | | ("Hattrick Hero S" or "Hat Trick Hero S" is the Saturn version of Taito's wacky, we-could-afford-to-sprite-capture-a-single-guy super-scalar spritey arcade soccer game (Hat Trick Hero '95 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmMjpqce_xQ ) where you're allowed to punch people and you gotta get the ball to your designated "Ace" and hope either you can squeeze it in with a straight shot (8-way aiming) right inside the post or that the goalie deflects it and then someone else on your team is actually there and can kick it straight in, because otherwise it's pretty much you 1-on-1 with the goalie who is a brick wall. C(?) button sprints when you've got the ball so you just get it to Ace, sprint, then there's the goalie bit. :P Graphics would be great maybe in a cloney way but VERY chunky vs the arcade version. Just very frustrating to play (and this was on Easy), darn it; finally got past 1st game 1-0 in Arcade mode but couldn't seem to squeeze anything in in 2nd game, my Brazil vs Saudi Arabia 'p'. X, Z to zoom; gotta zoom way out or can't see anything, makes the sprites look worse though or well less spritey. Shoulder buttons (wait I may have these reversed with X, Z) raise/lower camera angle which doesn't really help.) |
| | | | (Oh yeah HTHS also frustrating 'cause the B button passing is actually pretty good, the AI moves to an advancing position to pick up the passes. But they usually disappear once you get near the box. ; P) |

| | | The prequel, Sega Worldwide Soccer '97, or Victory Goal Worldwide Edition in Japan, was talked up over '98 by a Scottish reviewer on the Sega Saturn Shiro podcast, and generally got better reviews at the time, but the lower reviews of '98 mostly just say it isn't changed enough from '97. Anyway, '98 feels just slightly sharper to me--graphics a bit bolder, passes a bit snappier, character auto switching a bit better, shots a bit stronger. Could be I'm biased because I played '98 first, who knows. At any rate, they're pretty close. Which is interesting because '97 was by a Sega team called Team Aquila, says Sega Retro, but they were disbanded so '98 was by Sega CS1 and SIMS (a joint venture between Sega and Sanritsu--but the game isn't listed on Sega Retro's list of SIMS-developed titles). GameFAQs has dev credits for 98 but not 97; MobyGames won't respond. 'p' |

| | | Even the pause menus are pretty much the same. ; ) I rotated '98 (well both of them) and tried it horizontally and it was fine--somehow it had freaked me out before, not sure why. You aren't stuck not seeing as much in front of you from one way like you are vertically, and you've got more width to the screen, so yeah I'll probably keep it horizontal. It's sort of midway between Goal Storm and Winning Eleven 6 (whereas ISS Pro / WE games chronologically between those two are pretty much less-developed WE6s)--is that a good mix or a compromise? |
| | | I suppose the thing with 97 v 98 is that if you had '97, there wasn't anything jumping out from '98 that you needed for the money--and it feels the same having '98 looking at '97, even with VGWE being sub-$10 on eBay. Hm actually 98 has city-named club teams (England, France, Spain), whereas 97 is only national teams, so there'd be that. |
| | | | Like GameFAQs, Mobygames doesn't have Sega of Japan credits for '97. |

| | | 9:48 - USA vs Portugal (Normal) 17:53 - kinda got the buttons... 18:55 - rebound goal 25:29 - Chelsea vs London (Arsenal) 25:59 - (NOT!) leaping sidefoot volley goal 31:29 - jinking goal (Gianluca Vialli?) Dash is L Shoulder. 'p' At the time I thought that first Chelsea goal was a leaping sidefoot volley by #9 "Webber" (Gianluca Vialli in the actual 97-98 Chelsea), but playing it back, Vialli missed his volley attempt as #11 "Karno" (Dennis Wise) dashed in and smashed it. |

| | | 0:00 - I screw up at first and have to replay vs Denmark later anyway 14:40 - France vs Denmark (World Wide Cup) 25:02 - France vs Greece (World Wide Cup) 35:22 - France vs Ireland (World Wide Cup) 45:27 - France vs Croatia (World Wide Cup) 56:01 - wrap! 'p' Zoom the camera out (oh yeah and rotate the field to horizontal orientation) so you can aim your passes (and you really have to aim them 'p'; they can aim toward a teammate slightly but it isn't reliable so generally you have to make sure your intended target is on one of the eight d-pad direction lines from your passer) and see the defense in front of you the game falls apart: on Normal difficulty defenders usually let you dash right past them, and opposing goalies stand there like posts so if you aim to the side of them and don't hold the button down (which skies it over the goal) it's a sure goal. |
