| | | Playing through Streets of Rage in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3, as Adam--accidentally on Normal difficulty instead of Easy because I got too confused trying a possibly fake cheat code for extra continues. 'p' In RPCS3 with ReShade filters to combat the extreme washed-out blur of this port. 0:00 - Museum 4:01 - intro video 4:43 - Streets of Rage 6:07 - cheats real and maybe not 19:36 - Adam Hunter playthrough 20:42 - ReShade filters & Video Setup - Adjust Screen Size 1:46:50 - boss room 1:48:55 - ending & credits 1:51:42 - there is no P2 Start & this cheat code may be fake 'p' 2:12:08 - a little SoR 2 & 3 This took a really long time to play through and some save scumming for me on Normal, but it didn't seem as blatantly repetitive as SOR2--maybe that was just because the mechanics just seemed a little more solid here and the specific strengths and weaknesses of the various enemies better organized and making for more varied and challenging gameplay, whereas in SOR2 you just kinda hit almost everyone the same way. Also I picked the slow character here instead of the fast character like I was using in 2. I can't seem to get 2P Start to work in the cart version of the game either--so maybe those codes requiring it are just bunk and that's why only some of the FAQs listed them. Couldn't get that "extra continues" cheat to work either; it's got nearly as many downvotes as upvotes and isn't mentioned in a lot of the FAQs so hm. The volume in SOR1 seems to be lower than in 2 and 3. 'p' I got this collection because I was looking at getting all three SOR games as Genesis carts to dump, but SOR3 is SUPER expensive so I figured I'd get it here, and this has all the other games too. BUT maybe I'll have to get the carts (for 1 & 2 anyway, they're pretty cheap) after all so I could just use like Infinite Lives codes and not have to save scum. I kinda like this having all the Genesis stuff centralized in this collection though. ; D Also the masochistic side of me kinda likes being forced to save scum. Will I magically get good some day??? I was mumbling at the end I'd play SOR3 next but I forgot I still have to play SOR2 with music at a decent volume (ie not music-volume-nerfed like the PS Store downloadable version I played through like three times a few days ago), eh so this collection version of SOR2 next? OH apparently in SOR2 you CAN throw the weapon by pressing attack and jump at the same time. SOR3 has that too. SOR3 has shortcuts on the 6-button pad (one for back attack (normally jump plus attack I think), one for charge attack (normally press and hold attack for a bit), and one for blitz (dash) attacks without actually having to dash (or have your meter charged?)...but I think I'll stick to three buttons, 6 is more than my head can usually handle. o_o Gotta learn to incorporate the forward flip-throw, ie Jump button to vault over held opponent, then forward plus attack to throw them forward. OH Adam Hunter is the older brother of Skate Hunter from SoR2. ; D |

I was really surprised by how many enemies it throws at you (and without significant slowdown)--there were a few parts with a few more than are visible there, I think; and that was on Normal difficulty--if it's like SoR2, the higher difficulty settings will have even more enemies. |

| | | This time the manual wasn't replacing a previous one--that was World Class Leaderboard Golf for Genesis--so on Sega Retro after asking the editor Black Squirrel I found I had to go add the link from the https://segaretro.org/Sega_Mega_Drive_Ultimate_Collection page (note EU title; discussion says they kept that to show clearer connection to earlier, similarly named collection of which it is sort of a sequel). Copied the entry for the UK manual; ended up being a simple one-line change, just had to convert in the title of my manual file. I'd goofily uploaded a thumbnail file I thought I'd need, before realizing they're auto-generated on the wiki. I don't have delete (admin) capability so uh as far as I can tell by reading up on MediaWiki all I can do is flag it ({{speedy|reason}} (ie for speedy deletion) and {{Unused file|~~~~~}}. Talk/discussion pages on Sega Retro are complicated too, they don't seem to have Reply buttons, so you have to format in comments manually by editing: each ":" at the start of a comment means one layer of indentation, so you add one more colon than the comment to which you're replying; and at the end of your comment you add "~~~~" which will then auto-insert your name link and the time stamp; you also probably want to put at least a space before that because of course it doesn't do that itself. : P (The editor puts " -" before their name as an additional spacer.) |

Wikipedia also says 'For the soundtrack, Koshiro created a new composition method called the "Automated Composing System" to produce "fast-beat techno like jungle." It was among the most advanced electronic music creation technique at the time, incorporating heavily randomized sequences. This resulted in sounds generated automatically that, according to Koshiro, "you ordinarily never could imagine on your own."' To me that sounds like Koshiro phoning it in on this one--which is kinda what the soundtrack DID sound like, compared to the previous two games. 'p' Not a fan of the added game mechanics, either--just adding complication rather than fun. The biggest turn-off though is just how long it takes to defeat the enemies--even here on easy, as supposedly the hardest-hitting character, it was just a slog to grind through--so THANK GOODNESS it had pity on me and cut off after stage 5! = P (Wikipedia and other sources say the Japanese version is a lot easier, so I wonder if the grindiness was introduced in the Western version. Unfortunately, unlike the other games in the series, both the Japanese and US carts of SoR3 are SUPER expensive on eBay. 'p' It was a late game--out in '94--so maybe they just didn't make that many of 'em? (The Niche Barrier site records Japanese sales of 30K for III vs 17K for II, hm. I suppose the price on the Japanese version is largely due to Westerners snapping them up.)) Also that bulldozer stage really sucked. Oh yeah and the subway with the robot trains coming through every 10 seconds. ; PP Oh yeah, and the strobing nightclub stage. Sheesh, dis game! |
