Free DOS(BOX) game on GOG.

Smooth-scrolling 2D 3D engine, a major upgrade from TES:Arena two years earlier (see entry 2082). Still feels really unpleasant to bump into things; head-bob very awkward. Can't pan view down when you run into a short opponent like the first, red-eyed rat who attacked my shins, but after flailing around it eventually somehow crouched (?) to put me eye-to-eye with it, at which point I could mash the swordy button in the UI, which caused a chunky fist image to appear sort of to the side. Not sure it was hitting the rat. Sometimes the screen flashed red, probably when then rat was hitting me.

Still somewhat elaborate character creation; at least it didn't show my female character in semi-undress this time.

Learned from discussion on selectbutton https://selectbutton.net/t/games-you-ve-played-today-fourteen-by-kazuo-umezz/16629/1841 that there's a "Daggerfall Unity" thing that I guess runs the free game (it links to the Steam one, so I tried with that) through the Unity engine. This apparently smooths things out a bit, and you can toggle things like click to swing instead of, apparently, having to hold and drag to swing your sword. And there are lots of mods for it (at nexusmods).

When I disabled its Vsync option my laptop was making a faint but alarming high-pitched whining sound, so I re-enabled Vsync.

After figuring out to click the slider to switch swinging to click (right mouse button), I was able to kill that poor rat. Then there were more rats, some kind of floating, and a couple bats, and a little winged imp thing for which there was a vague message about the material of my weapon being ineffective or something, so I just had to leave.

Anyway when you're hit the screen flashes red and I don't think there's an option to turn that off, so I used it as an excuse to quit. Even with Unity doing whatever the game still feels clunky and slow, and I'm still not sure I like gooshing red-eyed little animals in this starting dungeon--although hadn't I been doing that all the time in say Elden Ring? But Miyazaki somehow makes it seem like a stroke for good.

Also the different mouse speed in the game always makes me feel like my mouse is off in the desktop afterwards and I reboot out of paranoia. There's an option to enable a controller but then the camera just rotated and looked at the ceiling; in the game's own ADVANCED controls section there are things to adjust maybe deadzone or something so maybe that could have helped, I don't know. Anyway I hadn't tried that so I was back to mouse and keyboard.
