The Japanese title for this 2D sidescrolling beat-'em-up set in ancient China is "Tenchi o Kurau II: Sekiheki no Tatakai"... but I'm never going to be able to remember that so I'll go by the name of the North American arcade release.

Runs nice and fast with a ton of big guys onscreen. Handsome period graphics, simple yet satisfying attacks (especially when you find a special weapon like a mace or giant sword) and fairly long stages make this a standout. Get a horse and you really start kicking butt, rather like getting a dragon steed in Golden Axe (except that the horses just give you greater mobility and enhanced melee attacks, rather than a fire breath attack :P).

I really wish there were a lot more 2D arcade ports like this.

Wikipedia says the title, "天地を喰らうII 赤壁の戦い," translates as "The Devouring of Heaven and Earth II: Battle of Red Cliffs."

2017 video & notes:

(Note: I accidentally recorded this at only 30fps. It got doubled to 60fps in the conversion process, but really only animates at 30. Ack!)

Me playing a credit with three of the five playable characters in Capcom's PS1 port of their medieval Chinese arcade beat-em-up, "Tenchi wo Kurau II: Sekiheki no Tatakai" ("The Devouring of Heaven and Earth II: Battle of Red Cliffs," according to Wikipedia, or "Warriors of Fate," as it was known in its North American arcade incarnation.

I think this is my favorite beat-em-up on a PlayStation console! Just great action--some really neat, subtle interactions and move combinations, and just so much battling but it somehow doesn't feel repetitive; played out all 10 credits it gives you 2-player with a friend yesterday (don't have a recording of it though, drat) and we *almost* made it to the end, gah! : D
