Today the ISS accidentally rotated 45 degreesJul 29, 2021 8:51 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:Shortly after a long-delayed 43-foot-long Russian science module docked with the International Space Station today, the module's rockets fired "inadvertently," rotating the entire space station 45 degrees off its regular facing. Two other Russian modules counterfired their thrusters to return the station to its intended attitude.

A gamma ray burst barely escapes a black holeJul 27, 2021 8:24 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:NASA has detected a "short" gamma ray burst, lasting less than a second—a momentary jet of highly energized particles just barely escaping from a massive star as its core collapsed into a black hole; while brief, "the burst emitted 14 million times the energy released by the entire Milky Way galaxy over the same amount of time."

Added 1 new A* page:Walked to the observatory hilltop, saw the more concentrated hazes of wildfires northwest and northeast, and the southern horizon of smoke from the larger fire, blowing east. Scores of grasshoppers leapt around me as I walked up the foot of the hill.

Please secure your patio umbrellaJul 20, 2021 10:24 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:My last adventure with a patio umbrella took place two years ago, at lunch with my brother's wife, infant son, and in-laws outside a diner across the freeway from the local college.

Looking up from our sandwiches, my brother's father-in-law and I saw the pole of our table's large umbrella making a silent and steady ascent! Quickly free of the table, the umbrella levitated in the direction of a group of college girls two tables behind us in the largely empty outdoor dining area. I grabbed impulsively at its pole as it passed over my seat, then clung on for someone's dear life as the breeze that had lifted it redoubled its effort to propel it toward the other diners, pulling me with it until I was sprawled backwards over two chairs, from which position I could do nothing but hold on and yell for help!

Fortunately, the in-law and the waiter swung into action and soon had everything back where it should be, with the staff making sure to secure the umbrella firmly to the table this time—and indeed, I have been more than happy since then to be able to leave the handling of patio umbrellas to professionals.

Back to cool low performance browsingJul 15, 2021 9:26 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:I think I figured out why my laptop's keyboard was broiling during the heat wave: a while back I'd changed the video card used for Firefox from the low-power onboard Intel video chip to the "high performance" nVidia GPU to work around a lock-up I was getting while viewing YouTube videos. Switching back to the lower power chip for browsing stopped the excessive heat, and fortunately the lock-up thing so far seems to have been taken care of by a system update or something (I hope!).

Words read directly from man's brain wavesJul 14, 2021 9:53 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:A new AP article describes a medical first headed by University of California, San Francisco neurosurgeon Dr. Edward Chang: via electrodes implanted on the surface of a paralyzed man's brain, scientists monitored brain waves that would normally control his vocal tract, translating them into a vocabulary of 50 recognized words read directly off his brain.

"Prompted with such questions as 'How are you today?' or 'Are you thirsty' the device eventually enabled the man to answer 'I am very good' or 'No I am not thirsty'"; "It takes about three to four seconds for the word to appear on the screen after the man tries to say it, said lead author David Moses, an engineer in Chang's lab."

  I fixed the T-shirt link after maybe 4 yearsJul 13, 2021 8:54 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:I fixed the link to the A* T-Shirt shop on the A* store page; I guess Spreadshirt had changed their store URL format since uhhh well since the last time I bought some fresh A* shirts with which to cover myself in 2017, and hadn't bothered to notify me effectively. : P

I mostly just wear those high-tech workout shirt things now instead of T-shirts, because I walk everywhere and also maybe I want to pretend I'm from the future, so I probably won't need more t-shirts for myself any time soon, but anyway at least that link works now until the next time they decide to change it secretly!

Maybe you can only clone it ~2999 timesJul 12, 2021 9:59 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:eBay was giving me a generic "something went wrong" message when trying to list the original art for today's page; finally created an new auction from scratch rather than cloning the last page's auction like I've been doing for uh thousands of pages now—so I guess the auctions were on their like 3000th clone! And maybe that was the limit or something, the old DNA just wouldn't go anymore. Either that or it got flagged because at first I titled it "Yes But"? Anyway the from-scratch auction went through fine, whew; Hopefully I got the shipping details and all that stuff right.

Drew this one early while waiting for wildfire smoke to clear. : P

If you can stop halfway through, maybe do itJul 09, 2021 9:14 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:A few days ago I saw a youngish, tall, skinny guy on a building rooftop in our little downtown, making some sort of light markings on an adjoining wall. I wondered briefly if he was the author of the large graffiti tag that had appeared on the stone wall in my little apartment building's front yard over the long weekend, but he didn't look furtive enough to be doing something he wasn't supposed to. Sure enough, next day he was there again, with half of a large, colorful "WELCOME [...]" mural behind him. Today though, nobody was there, and the mural showed no further sign of progress. An eternally half-finished, cryptic "Welcome" mural might be an interesting town feature.

Added 1 new A* page:Rearranging my exercise schedule to go walking first thing in the morning to avoid the heat was enough of a disruption to make me a little slow getting through my daily schedule this week. Gotta refocus on getting through the early day routine expeditiously!
