Dust dooms another solar Mars roverMay 18, 2022 10:34 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:"Dusty demise for NASA Mars lander in July; power dwindling" says AP News:

"It will be NASA's second Mars lander lost to dust: A global dust storm took out Opportunity in 2018. In InSight's case, it's been a gradual gathering of dust, especially over the past year. NASA's two other functioning spacecraft on the Martian surface — rovers Curiosity and Perseverance — are still going strong thanks to nuclear power."

"The InSight team anticipated this much dust buildup, but hoped a gust wind of wind or dust devil might clean off the solar panels. That has yet to happen, despite several thousand whirlwinds coming close."

"Another science instrument, dubbed the mole, was supposed to burrow 16 feet (5 meters) underground to measure the internal temperature of Mars. But the German digger never got deeper than a couple feet (a half-meter) because of the unexpected composition of the red dirt, and it finally was declared dead at the beginning of last year."

Plants grown in lunar soilMay 14, 2022 12:03 AM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:Scientists grew plants in lunar soil for the first time; they only had 12 grams of moon dirt—collected by the Apollo missions—to work with, but their thale cress seeds managed to grow in the tiny samples.

The plants did end up somewhat stunted: "The longer the soil was exposed to punishing cosmic radiation and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The Apollo 11 samples — exposed a couple billion years longer to the elements because of the Sea of Tranquility's older surface — were the least conducive for growth."

Micrometeorite impacts on the lunar surface also spread particles of cooled molten glass throughout the soil, which might not help plant growth.

Supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* imagedMay 12, 2022 9:50 PM PDT | url

Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, has been imaged!

The collaborative, Earth-spanning radio telescope imaging group, the Event Horizon Telescope, has released their composite radio image of A*, the first time the hole has been directly imaged. They say this was a harder image to get than their first-ever black hole image, the 2019 image of the supermassive black hole at the center of distant galaxy M87; for one thing, for this image they had to get readings through all the dust on the galactic plane between us and the core.

They said it exactly matched what was predicted for our black hole by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity: "it appears to us to have about the same size in the sky as a donut on the Moon," and "is about the size of the orbit of Mercury around our sun" (quote from AP News).

Speaking of the increased difficulty in imaging A*, they also said: "The gas in the vicinity of the black holes moves at the same speed — nearly as fast as light — around both Sgr A* and M87*. But where gas takes days to weeks to orbit the larger M87*, in the much smaller Sgr A* it completes an orbit in mere minutes. This means the brightness and pattern of the gas around Sgr A* was changing rapidly as the EHT Collaboration was observing it — a bit like trying to take a clear picture of a puppy quickly chasing its tail."

  Neal AdamsMay 06, 2022 11:32 PM PDT | url

Illustrator Neal Adams passed away on April 28th. He left his mark on comics with his modernization of Batman in the late '60s; his fluid, semi-photorealistic style was a stunning break from the way superhero comics had been drawn up to that point, and it changed the comics forever.

Top two panels from "World's Finest Comics" issue 176, recolored in "Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams Vol. 1." The third, a cover, is the recolored version from BIbNA Vol 2.

Added 1 new A* page:After talking about frustrations with getting eyes lined up and so forth—re: page 10, for instance—I had a recent page—I think it must have been page 19—where I caught myself making my frequent error of drawing the near eye too far back toward the ear, and corrected it in the pencil stage—and then found myself completely bored with the result. It just felt dead. So I don't know, maybe I NEED the eyes fighting each other. Maybe that's actually the whole thing for me—subconsciously trying to reconcile two different eye expressions held simultaneously in a single head. Or is it just an excuse? But I think I want to embrace my googly eyes.
