Oh, it's almost a holiday, thank goodness! I'm using the eve of Thanksgiving as an excuse to take the rest of the week off; now I can work on catching up on sleep, and hopefully getting my clock turned back around to daylight hours after going all vampire for jeez probably almost three weeks running now; gotta get better at dodging those internet rabbit holes, blah blah. A relatively new fallen leaf next week, that's the ticket! = D
A healthy and reasonably happy or at least not entirely miserable holiday or weekend or series of days to you all, and thank you very much for your great patience. : )

Added 1 new A* page:A NASA recent article says that just a few days into conducting science operations, their new James Webb telescope has already been able to use its huge infrared-light-gathering mirrors to discover two galaxies thought to be among the oldest-known galaxies yet: if initial measurements are correct, the light Webb collected from them was emitted when the universe, now 13.8 billion years old, was a mere 450 and 350 million years old. They are labelled [1] and [2], respectively, in the image below:

Levay (STScI): "Two of the farthest galaxies seen to date are captured in these Webb Space Telescope pictures of the outer regions of the giant galaxy cluster Abell 2744. The galaxies are not inside the cluster, but many billions of light-years farther behind it."
Although small—just "a few percent" of the Milky Way's dimensions—scientists were surprised to find these galaxies looking so smooth and orderly; it had been thought that galaxy formation would have started too late for them to be little more than chaotic blobs at this early point in the universe's life, but now the date for the birth of the first galaxies may have to be pushed back: "these galaxies would have had to have started coming together maybe just 100 million years after the big bang."
And despite their small scale, the galaxies are extremely bright. Scientists are tossing around a few theories to explain it: they could have lots of low-mass stars packed relatively tightly together or, more tantalizingly, they could contain "far fewer extraordinarily bright stars"; "long theorized, they would be the first stars ever born, blazing at blistering temperatures and made up only of primordial hydrogen and helium": "Population III" stars.

NASA's first 322-foot Space Launch System rocket blasted off today, putting an Orion capsule with three dummy astronauts on course to reach lunar orbit by Monday. The capsule is due to return to Earth in 26 days, providing data for a 2024 crewed lunar orbit.

Today—Friday, anyway—was the Veteran's Day national holiday! So let's just pretend that I took the day off and totally didn't finish the next A* page and post a preview on social media and almost er maybe actually post the comic just for a little while before I remembered there was a holiday sometime around this weekend. Uh. I'll post it Monday when I pretend to be doing the work I actually did on Friday when I was supposed to be not working, yeah, yeah that's the ticket! = D Eeessshhh what a shammer I am. = ii

Added 1 new A* page:Scientists have found a new likely black hole closest to Earth: Gaia BH1 is 1,555.8 light years away, beating out the next-nearest likely black hole, A0620-00, which is 3000 light years away.
As with most black holes, the existence of these black holes was inferred by their gravitational pull on their binary partner; nothing known to science could account for the orbit of the other star besides a black hole. According to Wikipedia's list of the known black holes nearest to Earth, an even closer candidate, V Puppis, thought to be a trinary system 960 light years away, was announced in 2008, but the evidence for a third body there being a black hole has been less convincing; a 2021 study failed to confirm that a third body there has to be a black hole, only going so far as to say that the readings indicate "the presence of third light from a star that is cooler than those of the close binary."
