Recent science articles from The Washington Post:

"NASA, Pentagon award contract to build nuclear-powered rocket engine": Lockheed Martin wins a contract to develop a nuclear-powered rocket engine, aiming for a 2027 test flight. The article mentions that NASA is keen on such an engine for Mars missions, and notes that
"Nuclear thermal power uses a fission-based nuclear reactor to heat hydrogen to an extremely high temperature and then shoot the gas through an engine nozzle to create thrust. Lockheed Martin said that for safety reasons, the reactor would not be turned on until the spacecraft has reached a safe orbit."

"Scientists woke up a 46,000-year-old roundworm from Siberian permafrost": "A female microscopic roundworm that spent the last 46,000 years in suspended animation deep in the Siberian permafrost was revived and started having babies in a laboratory dish." "The frozen soil the nematode was embedded in came from an ancient gopher hole, excavated from about 130 feet below the surface." "Researchers thaw the soil, taking care to not warm it too quickly to avoid cooking the nematodes. The worms then start wriggling around, eating bacteria in a lab dish and reproducing."

Added 1 new A* page:Hey the news thingy works! So, right after I got that last A* page uploaded uh what three days ago I dunno it's kind of been a blur, my web host had a malware scare and implemented a new file management protocol that basically meant I had to go through like all of my web stuff and make sure that it was still working okay with the new security scheme in place. As far as I can tell, it is now, so we're back, baby!

Whew. It was a bit of a haul 'cause I had accumulated quite a few odd little web projects in tinkering around on this server over the past I think 20+ years. So this was also a chance to clear out the dead wood, heck I even had a few fossilized, unlinked A* pages cluttering up the place, and old side hustles I'd never wanted to delete because maybe somebody somewhere linked to them once who knows and I didn't want to get broken link reports. ; D

It felt good to get that stuff cleared out, anyway, and be left with a much leaner and meaner server. And I didn't get rid of ALL my weird projects, I mean there's still lots of strange stuff hanging around that I dunno who knows about but it's there. But a lot less to worry about maintaining than there was before. ^ _^

I didn't get ANY comic making done and not quite enough sleep either but oh well, hopefully we're set for at least another 20 years now!

The thousands of low-res daily comics from previous A* episodes are now archived on archive.org, so hopefully they'll be around to puzzle future generations even if a meteor strikes my apartment or my cloning project fails. ^ _^

The brand-new episode 45 e-book can be found on the episodes & e-books page; download links will be emailed to e-book-level-and-above backers of the A* Patreon campaign at the start of Patreon's next monthly cycle!

Added 1 new A* page:That's the end of episode 45!

I'm gonna take my usual few days off to back up this episode, put together the e-book version, get my ducks in a row for the next episode, and so forth. Oh yeah I also wanna see about getting the low-res comics archived on archive.org so they'll always be around in case a meteor strikes my apartment. ^_ ^

So episode 46 should be starting next week!

Webb spots further black holesJul 10, 2023 5:45 PM PDT | url

AP News: The Webb space telescope spotted a 9 million solar mass black hole at the center of a galaxy "within a mere 570 million years of the Big Bang." But "Webb already has spotted other black holes that appear to be even closer to the Big Bang nearly 14 billion years ago, but those findings are still under review."

The next A* page is painted but only after an extended fight and now it's late, so I'm going to call it a night and come back and scan it tomorrow when hopefully I'll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and its weird globs of watercolor and white paint will all be dry. ^ _^
