Added 1 new A* page:Re: yesterday's post about catching myself recycling ideas, it seemed to me also in fleshing out this episode's plot that a certain action centerpiece my brain suddenly refused *not* to insert into the middle of things *might* be something I saw in some martial arts flick from eh maybe ten to twenty years ago (so, relatively modern as far as my awareness of such things goes =p ); or at least, it's similar enough that it triggered that vague connection—without providing more detail. Might not really be all that similar in practice! I'm not going to try looking up whatever it was to check. ]_]

Added 1 new A* page:Sharpening up the plot for this episode today, I realized one mechanical part of it is pretty similar to one I've done before. It isn't the first time I've spotted myself repeating similar elements... Maybe I should just think of it as I've got say 20 plot tricks and I'm continually honing them. ; )

... Might be less than 20.

Black hole magnetic field in polarized lightMar 25, 2021 9:43 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:
image © EHT Collaboration

^ Image of the supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy M87 in polarized light, which reveals the magnetic field lines generated by the black hole. The area seen in the image is 0.0063 light years across, or 37 trillion miles: about 5 times the size of the orbit of Pluto.

It was released by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, who provide more information and illustrations here, including:

"'The observations suggest that the magnetic fields at the black hole's edge are strong enough to push back on the hot gas and help it resist gravity's pull. Only the gas that slips through the field can spiral inwards to the event horizon,' explains Jason Dexter, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, and coordinator of the EHT Theory Working Group."

Galaxy M87 (Messier 87) is a somewhat distant 54 million light years away from Earth, but at nearly 1 million light years across, it is one of the largest galaxies within imaging distance of Earth. The EHTC measures M87's central black hole at 6.5 trillion solar masses; our own galaxy's central supermassive black hole, known as radio source Sagittarius A*, is a mere 4 million solar masses and much harder to see from Earth due to the intervening gas and dust, and to the current relative inactivity of Sgr A* itself.

Added 1 new A* page:That's the end of episode 41! (That one was so long I've been surprised when I've flipped back to the episode start: "oh yeah, that's how this episode started!" ;)

Episode 42 will start on *Wednesday*, because tomorrow I'll be shuffling files around and making the episode 41 e-book and doing other boring tidying-up stuff like that. (And shipping off a couple more original watercolor pages—thanks folks who've been picking up recent pages. : )

Selenis has been solving a lot of problems in and around her new city of residence lately, but can she solve...a murder mystery??

  A* turns 12!Mar 18, 2021 9:52 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:It's A*'s 12th birthday today! That's for the comic, not the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy...although, I don't think science has pinpointed the date on which the black hole formed (just that the Milky Way is some 12 or 13 ((billion)) years old, so, some day back then), so there's a 1 in 365 chance that the black hole's birthday is today, too—cosmologically speaking, not the worst odds! : D

Thanks to everyone who's read and or supported A* over the years; with your help, we'll be around for another 12 ((billion))! : D

Loose vs tight, line vs...no lineMar 09, 2021 11:06 PM PST | url

Added 1 new A* page:How to get that pleasingly loose effect of effortless brush play, and yet the necessary detail to convey story? I've been doing a lot of dark line work of late, and that's good for some effects but can tamp down the breezy things watercolor can do—although in the case of this page, adding the thick dark outline around Selenis at the end seemed to provide helpful contrast.

  On BeaksMar 01, 2021 9:08 PM PST | url

Added 1 new A* page:Had a bit of a belated brainwave on beaks late last week: I'd been drawing them most of the time like they hinged where the base of the beak meets the skull—but of course, they hinge much farther back, toward the rear of the skull, since the lower beak is a projection of the jawbone. Silly me. Gotta remember that and hinge them correctly. : )
