India lands near Moon's south poleAug 23, 2023 8:16 PM PDT | url

From APNews: India, in their first Moon landing, became the first country to land a spacecraft near the Moon's largely unexplored south pole, where it is thought water ice may survive in permanent crater shadows; such a source of water could greatly benefit a lunar colony. The lander is due to release a rover in the next day or so.

More free planetsAug 10, 2023 7:06 PM PDT | url

From The NY Times: Astronomers estimating from microlensing events have calculated that there are six times more planets free-floating in space "than orbiting their own suns," and that "there are about 20 times more free-floating worlds in our Milky Way than stars, with Earth-mass planets 180 times more common than rogue Jupiters"—which is because "planets can be kicked out of their star systems only by larger objects."

Got myself behind and tired and migrainey again. Working on getting used to staying in bed for 8 hours—so out of practice it's hard to lay still that long. Sheesh.

So haven't managed any drawing in the latter half of this week but I did tidy up a few things around the site, including consolidating my social media down to, well, Tumblr, because that's the one I like. : ) I post all kinds of silly art and game and comic and space stuff there.

  Happy break for Voyager 2Aug 04, 2023 4:40 PM PDT | url

From AP News: Earlier in the week it was revealed that scientists had been out of touch with the 46-year-old Voyager 2 after its antenna had accidentally been directed to point 2 degrees away from Earth by NASA flight controllers; they had thought they'd probably have to wait until Oct. 15, when an automatic reset would cause the craft to re-orient itself properly, but in the meanwhile they tried sending a command to the craft that would turn the antenna correctly, but which they didn't think would get through; but it did! So contact has been re-established with the space probe in its journey outside of our Solar System.

NASA accidentally cuts off Voyager 2Aug 01, 2023 9:08 PM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:From AP News: In an illustration of tiny things that can have critical consequences in spaceflight, NASA flight controllers of the 46-year-old Voyager 2 probe, now outside our Solar System and more than 12 billion miles from Earth, "accidentally sent a wrong command nearly two weeks ago that tilted the spacecraft's antenna away from Earth and severed contact."

NASA's Deep Space Network picked up a "heartbeat signal" from the probe today, showing that it is still operational. They plan to send a command that would turn its antenna—which is now turned 2 degrees off-target—back to Earth. However, this is not expected to work.

From blogs.nasa.gov: "Voyager 2 is programmed to reset its orientation multiple times each year to keep its antenna pointing at Earth; the next reset will occur on Oct. 15, which should enable communication to resume. The mission team expects Voyager 2 to remain on its planned trajectory during the quiet period."

Commands take 18 hours to reach the probe. "Its identical twin Voyager 1" "is now 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, making it the most distant spacecraft."
