| | | | I was playing this in Sonic Origins (see entry 1716) but I can't beat the darned end boss at least without trying debug mode but I figure it'll just be easier in Mednafen (entry 1537), either just with insta save stating and/or an invincibility cheat code. Also then I won't have to worry about whatever little differences the Origins version has vs the original. 'p' |

| | | | Oh right I'm using the ROM dumped from the PS3 Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (entry 2077). |

| | | FFFE12:0009 Infinite Lives. Cheat from https://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2_(16-bit)/Hidden_content#Cheat_device_codes (Apparently Game Genie codes don't work in Mednafen; a lot of the codes on gamehacking.org SHOW "Standard" address versions but are actually converted Game Genie codes...maybe? Anyway I couldn't get the gamehacking.org ones to work.) In md.cht it comes out as [9feeb724052c39982d432a7851c98d3e] sonic the hedgehog 2 R A 1 L 0 00fffe12 09 Infinite Lives |

| | | May need FFB030:00FF Invincibility For Sonic (Enemies Can't Touch You/Can't collect Rings) for the final boss. |

| | | | Found to get the downscaling right from my recorded Mednafen video, have to size in Photoshop to 320 horizontal, rather than 224 vertical (224 vertical sets 319 horizontal, and everything is just a bit off). |

| | | In Mednafen. 0:23 - playthrough 52:57 - oh special stage 2:11:36 - save states vs memorization 2:17:34 - just 12 times 2:19:56 - ending & credits 2:24:32 - collecting chaos emeralds 2:51:21 - Super Sonic Midway through I finally looked up how to get to the bonus stages: have 50 rings when activating a "star post" (pretty sure I was calling them "star POLEs" if anything ; D) waypoint thingy, then jump into the circle of red sparkles that appear above the post. Complete the bonus stage (hurrah for save state spam! 'p'), get a chaos emerald; do that seven times, then when you get 50 rings in a stage you transform into invulnerable (except for drowning--and probably death pits and crushing?), super-fast and kinda hard to control golden Super Sonic for the rest of the life/stage. Chaos emeralds are cumulative across runs of the game--I mean I got some but not all 7, cleared the game, started a fresh game during that same session, and the chaos emeralds I got then added to the ones I'd got in the just-completed run. Having Super Sonic available goes away on game over, and on resetting the console. He pretty much breaks the game although parts of the stages where you have to make delicate maneuvers can be tricky 'cause he's just so darned fast. The sorta bobsled-track bonus stage thing is one of the better ones in 2D Sonic games, although without save states the ring patterns would just plain require a lotta memorization, bleh. Having instant save states actually redeems the game quite a bit for me though--I mean particularly with the memorization battle against Mecha Sonic, and the final boss fight where you gotta hit 12 times without taking a hit on those darned hard-to-parse hurt boxes, yeesh. The later bosses in general are pretty repetitive, like you just dodge around and counter attack the same pattern x number of times until they blow up. 'p' The stages are more involved than CD's--just look at all the stuff to do among the petro-horrors of Oil Ocean, for instance--but I'm not super-fond of the mazelike layouts of Mystic Cave and Metropolis (not to mention the colors, enemies, and running-on-nuts of Metropolis 'p'p'pp'). Chemical Plant, Casino Night (gambling horror), and horrific Oil Ocean are pretty good though. |
