John Romero's "Apple Time Warp" podcastJun 02, 2022 2:28 AM PDT | url

Added 1 new A* page:John Romero, of id Software and Doom fame, got his start in games programming on the Apple II, and he has a long-running Apple II podcast: in Apple Time Warp, he holds sometimes slightly awkward (he's one of those people with incredibly detailed day-by-day recall of dates and events from his life, and he tends to pepper his guests with a tidal wave of Apple II factoids connected to whatever they're discussing) interviews with famed Apple II game programmers, often getting quite technical and excited about specific programming tricks they used to get their games running on that early consumer computer.

He's only interviewed 7 people since the first in 2016—after a 2013 pilot episode ^_^—but guests include such luminaries as Jordan Mechner, programmer of Karateka and Prince of Persia, and Nasir Gebelli, whose fast, 3D Apple II shooting games got him a gig contracting for Square, for whom he programmed the first three Final Fantasy games on the NES, and Secret of Mana on the SNES (Gebelli famously composed his programs in his head, then typed them directly into a mini-compiler in assembly language).

The original 16" x 6.75" watercolor art for today's new A* page is up for auction on eBay. : )
