Web tinkering instead of drawing: wrap rapDec 14, 2022 6:06 PM PST | url

I did NOT get the next A* page drawn today—I was drawn into tinkering with web scripts instead. Not nearly as interesting as the next scene in a space adventure, but I suppose it's got to be done now and then to make sure the site keeps being accessible for as many people as possible.

Specifically, I found that I needed to make sure very long strings of text in the blog don't end up breaking the page layout and shoving everything off the side of the browser window. There's a CSS parameter made to guard against that very thing, but it wasn't working in Google's Chrome browser, because it turns out that Google decided they didn't like it, and were going to ignore it. Instead, they liked a competing parameter, and expected everyone to use that instead.

Flashback of the old web bubble Netscape browser wars! Anyway, hopefully it's all gonna work for pretty much everything now. In fact, I suppose I may as well use this opportunity to make sure; it only takes a surprisingly short text string to blow through a page layout on a mobile phone browser, depending on how it's being used, but I'll put in a ridiculously overlong one here to test it even in computer-based browsers too:

So that should be peacefully wrapping inside the blog text box now rather than blowing straight out the side of your browser, and if it isn't, I will scream. = o

Anyway tomorrow, to the drawing board!
